NO
ODORLESS OR REGULAR TURPENTINE DURING INDOOR WORKSHOPS.
It will be easier to capture the nuances of flesh tones
and eliminate hazardous fumes. |
| Please only use odorless turpentine
at the end of the workshop to clean brushes. Turpentine
will not be necessary during the workshop. |
| You can wrap your wet brushes
in plastic wrap (group your darks and lights together)
to avoid drying. If you have access to a refrigerator,
storing your brushes and palette there will keep them
wet even longer. |
Odorless
turpentine is provided at Craig Srebnik Fine Art--at END
of the workshop for cleaning only--but not at other schools
unless indicated. You will need to bring a small container
with a lid. |
Safflower
Oil (Utrecht's is inexpensive) and a small container with
a lid. Safflower is more clear and darkens less than linseed
oil; or linseed oil, preferably alkali refined |
I
keep safflower oil in a small bottle with an eye-dropper
so it is easy to add to paints. |
Kerosene,
odorless turpentine or oil can be used to clean your brushes.
Turpentine or other solvents (not kerosene) must be washed
out of brushes with soap and warm water. Safflower oil
can also be used to clean your brushes.I use kerosene
to clean my brushes. |
Oil
paint can be cleaned off of hands and brushes with baby
oil. |

by Air and Packing Your Supplies |
DO
NOT pack any solvents: odorless turpentine, kerosene,
etc. I will provide odorless turpentine for my own workshops
(not at workshops at other schools). Please bring two
small containers with lids for turpentine and oil. |
I suggest
putting all of your supplies in your CHECKED luggage--Don't
put any supplies in your carry-on luggage. I put safflower
oil in a small bottle with and eye-dropper, plastic bottle
or film canister and label it. |
Print
out the MSDS* pages below (material information sheets)
from Gamblin and take them with you to the airport--one
set with your paints in your checked luggage and another
in your carry-on bag. |
In
the Gamblin page below, something is considered flammable
if its flashpoint is 140 degrees or below. The MSDS sheets
show the flashpoints are 620 degrees, confirming that
they are not flammable by airlines standards. |
Under
"DOT (Department of Transportation) shipping class", the
MSDS states, "Not regulated by DOT as a hazardous material". |
The
MSDS states, "This product contains no hazardous materials
under the current OSHA standard." |
If
asked, tell inspectors that the tubes are vegetable oil
based paints (not oil paint), and that your safflower
oil is the vegetable oil painting medium. The MSDS confirms
this under "Chemical name". |
*MSDS:
Print out and put in your carry-on luggage. I think that
three will be sufficient, though they are available for
other colors, too. |
